Katy High School 1999 graduate Kenneth Charles Riehl II, 26, was killed in Nacogdoches early Sunday morning in a traffic accident officials say was caused by two other motorists involved in illegal street racing.

Riehl and Kenneth Thompson, 22, of Lufkin were both killed when the Chevrolet Cavalier they were riding in was hit full-force by a Ford Mustang being driven by Antonio Martinez, 20, of Lufkin, who was alledgedly street racing a Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Shaun Gilmore, a 22-year-old Nacogdoches resident.

Thompson was the driver and Riehl a passenger. A second passenger, 22-year-old Victor Villarreal of Lufkin, suffered injuries and was released from the hospital Monday afternoon.

Riehl was a 1999 graduate of Katy High School and played linebacker for the Tigers' 1997 state championship football team.

Martinez and his 16-year-old sister both survived the collision and were released from Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital Monday morning while another passenger in their car, 18-year-old Jose Tamez of Lufkin died at the hospital.

Martinez could be charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter in addition to the charge of felony racing.

Gilmore was arrested Sunday morning for felony racing and could face two to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. He was released from jail Sunday on $15,000 bond.

Gilmore swerved to avoid the Cavalier, instead hitting a curb and disabling his vehicle. Neither he nor his passenger were injured. According to the Nacogdoches Dailey Sentinel, it is the second time Gilmore has been arrested for felony racing in the past year.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Katy, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16 with Rev. Roy Meadows officiating.

Riehl's obituary appears on Page 5A of today's paper.
