Less than 5 percent of Katy ISD voters participated in the election of three trustees Saturday and those who did cast ballots did so for the incumbents - Christina Crockett, Eric Duhon and Judy Snyder - in races that were tightly contested.

Position 5 incumbent Duhon was elected to his fourth three-year term by 136 votes over challenger Cynthia Blackman, who was in her second attempt for a trustee seat. Duhon captured 2,278 votes to Blackman's 2,142. Fellow challengers Ross Raymond and Fred Krenek took 325 and 148 votes respectively.

Duhon, who said his third term would be his last, said he was 95 percent certain he would not seek a fourth, but would stay involved in the elective process. "I will start tomorrow seeking some of our fine people to take over when the time comes."

Despite accusing Blackman of unethical behavior, Duhon was complimentary to those who sought seats this year. "I deeply appreciate anyone who has a passion for public education. When a person decides to run for the school board, one only hopes they come with that passion intact and not for personal gain or public notoriety," he said.

He also expressed disappointment in those who choose not to stay informed about district business. The most disturbing part of this election was talking with some of you who were so misinformed about taxation, school funding, teachers' salaries . . that one really starts to believe that the most dangerous threat to our society is an uninformed or misdirected voter," he said.

Crockett, who held onto the Position 3 seat, defeated attorney Kameron Searle 2,671 to 2,159. Crockett was appointed to the board in December when trustee Jackie Birkel resigned.

And while she has six months of experience in district matters, she said there is still much to learn. "I am learning the board business is very cyclical and there are still a lot of things I haven't seen," she said.

Crockett, too, became embroiled in campaign politics, accusing challengers Searle, Blackman and Chris Sanders, who ran on a conservative slate, of distributing false information about her.

The tactics, she said, slowed her ability to present her philosophies and general values to voters. "I was spending every minute correcting inaccuracies being thrown out there," she said.

Snyder, who won her fifth consecutive term, defeated newcomer Sanders by 149 votes - 2,507 to 2,358.

According to officials, Katy ISD is home to more than 100,000 registered voters, 4,893 opted to participate.

Trustees will be sworn into office following the board's regular meeting Monday, May 19.
