Recognize risk factors, symptoms of PAD
According to the International Diabetes Federation Time To Act, every 30 seconds a lower limb is amputated due to diabetes. More than 12 million people will be diagnosed with Peripheral Arterial Disease this year.
Even though the numbers are rising, Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) still goes undiagnosed. Unfortunately, the symptoms of PAD can be masked by diabetic neuropathy (numbness or tingling) or even blamed on old age.
PAD is on the rise. If untreated, PAD often results in limb loss.
The ADA is now recommending that any person with diabetes over the age of 50 be screened for PAD. People under 50 with diabetes and more than one risk factor should also be screened.
Screening only takes a few minutes and consists of a foot exam and an Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) test.
An ABI test is painless, and requires a blood pressure in the arm and leg. The measurement will indicate if there are blockages in the arteries that may require further testing.
In support of earlier diagnosis and treatment of PAD, Christus St. Catherine Hospital will be offering free ABI testing for people with two or more risk factors.
People at risk for PAD may have the following risk factors or symptoms:
Risk factors are:
•Diabetes,
•Smoker,
•Coronary Artery Disease,
•High cholesterol,
•Stroke, and
•Hypertension.
Symptoms are:
•Discomfort, aching, fatigue in legs when walking,
•Need to stop and rest when walking,
•Numbness in feet,
•Absence of hair on the legs and/or feet,
•Dry flaky skin on legs,
•Brittle nails, and
•Tough calloused nails.
Christus St. Catherine Hospital’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab performs over 1,200 Cardiac and Peripheral cases per year.
Due to the demand for these types of procedures in Katy, and the program’s tremendous success, construction is already underway to double their capacity by adding a second state of the art Angiography suite.
For more information or to schedule a free ABI test, please call 281-599-6658.
