A Taste of African Heritage

Join Prairie View A&M University nutrition education associate Janelle Levy-Verry for a six-session class for people of all ages with an interest in learning how to add more flavor and good nutrition to meals, anyone interested in learning more about African heritage and culinary history. Food demonstrations and tastings will be part of each week’s class. Classes are from 1-2:30 p.m. on successive Wednesdays, Feb. 1-March 8, at the Harris County Pct. 4 Hockley Community Center, 28515 Old Washington Road in Hockley. Registration is required. Hear from teenage incentive programs founder Mattie Mason as she talks about her program’s efforts to serve teens with discipline problems, drug problems, low self-esteem, poor grades and pregnant or parenting or social problems, to keep them in school. Also, learn about several organizations that Lions Club members are leading, including the Katy Lions basketball team. Four Chaplains Honor and Remembrance Ceremony

In association with the Four Memorial Chaplains Foundation, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 164 of Katy will hold an honor and remembrance ceremony for four U.S. chaplains, of different faiths, who died together during World War II. Heart of Katy Craft Market

A Closer Look at Nature: Nature Journaling

All are welcome at this program designed especially for school-aged children. Each class includes a 30-minute presentation followed by an activity. Texas Chili Cookoff

A family-friendly Katy tradition celebrates its fifth year. Celebrity judges will judge the chili dishes in several categories: visual, aroma, taste, texture and favorite. Community judges will judge the best decorated tent. Proceeds benefit the Katy ISD FFA. The cookoff is from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the American Furniture Warehouse parking lot, 555 Katy Fort Bend Road.
