“It goes to show how high scoring the game is,” Robinson said, adding that a 120-lb. athlete, while considered small for 11-man football, is perfect for the six-man game. A roster for a six-man football team might have less than 15 athletes on it.

Faith West welcomes new coach for 2022 season

Posted

The Faith West Eagles want to soar to new heights in 2022. They brought in a new coach, Travis Robinson, to lead them there.

Robinson joined the Eagles in February. This is his first head coaching job, and he knows much work is ahead. The Eagles, who compete in TAPPS Division 1 six-man football, did not field a team last year due to the pandemic. In 2020, the Eagles finished 0-6.

Robinson described six-man football as “basketball on grass” and very entertaining to watch.

“Go to a six-man game, and you’ll never see the action stop,” Robinson said. “An offensive drive can be less than five plays.”

Robinson said if a team is leading by 45 points, either at halftime or in the second half, the game stops.

“It goes to show how high scoring the game is,” Robinson said, adding that a 120-lb. athlete, while considered small for 11-man football, is perfect for the six-man game. A roster for a six-man football team might have less than 15 athletes on it.

“You’ve got seven, eight kids as your main core and they’ll play both ways,” Robinson said.

One of the bigger players returning for the Eagles is senior fullback Angel Machado (5-11, 180). Robinson said Machado can play both noseguard and linebacker on defense.

Senior running back and defensive end Ethan Bailey will be another player to watch, along with sophomore quarterback and defensive back Joshua Turner.

“He’s an incredible athlete,” Robinson said of Turner. “As a freshman, he made second-team all-district in basketball and baseball.”

The Eagles kick off their season Aug. 26 against Logos Prep Academy.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Robinson said. “I hope it turns out to be a good thing.”
