Halfway through, four Katy ISD teams remain ranked in Houston area football polls

Posted

Midway through the season, four Katy ISD teams remain ranked in this week’s Houston area high school football media poll.

Katy and Tompkins are ranked in the top five in Class 6A, while Paetow is ranked No. 4 in Class 5A. Taylor is ranked No. 14 in the Class 6A poll. All four teams have been ranked the entire season.

The rankings, organized by Houston Chronicle high school sports coordinator Adam Coleman, are selected by 12 media voters in the Houston area, representing the Katy Times, Houston Chronicle, Sealy News, Fort Bend Herald, Texan Live, VYPE and the Lone Star Christian Sports Network, among others.

Katy (5-0) stayed No. 2 in the Class 6A rankings behind unanimous No. 1 pick North Shore. The Tigers beat Dickinson last week, 49-7. Dickinson is ranked No. 13 in the Class 6A poll.

Katy plays No. 5 Tompkins in a much-anticipated District 19-6A clash Thursday at 6 p.m. at Legacy Stadium. The game pits two undefeated teams against each other and features Tompkins senior quarterback and Alabama commit Jalen Milroe and Katy senior tight end and Texas A&M commit Fernando Garza, Katy senior defensive back and Arizona commit Dalton Johnson and Katy senior defensive back and Florida State commit Hunter Washington.

Tompkins stayed No. 5 after shutting out Morton Ranch, 48-0, in a District 19-6A matchup last week. The Falcons are 5-0 and now face the Tigers in matchup of significant district title implications. Tompkins fell to Katy, 35-30, last season, giving the Tigers their most competitive district game since Katy’s 17-12 win over Seven Lakes in 2013.

Taylor (5-1) stayed No. 14 after topping Mayde Creek, 56-42, in a district shootout last week. The Mustangs play Cinco Ranch on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Legacy Stadium.

Mayde Creek received four votes this week.

In the Class 5A poll, Paetow (5-0) remained No. 4 after a 45-0 rout of Terry. The Panthers host No. 1 Richmond Foster in a huge District 10-5A, Division I showdown on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Legacy Stadium. The game is a district zone play championship. The winner will play either Manvel or Hightower for the district title later in the season.
