Katy, Cinco Ranch, Tompkins advance to area round

Three of the four Katy ISD schools in the baseball playoffs advanced past the first round last week, with Cinco Ranch, Tompkins and Katy each sweeping in their three game series and advancing to the area round.

Katy, Cinco Ranch, Tompkins advance to area round

Three of the four Katy ISD schools in the baseball playoffs advanced past the first round last week, with Cinco Ranch, Tompkins and Katy each sweeping in their three game series and advancing to the area round.

Cinco Ranch earned two wins over Heights to advance, winning 10-0 on Thursday before beating them 13-4 on Friday to complete the sweep.

Parker Booth led the Cougars to their first win, pitching a one-hit shutout in the 10-0 win while striking out six and walking one over five innings. Lucas Franco, Logan Sosolik and Ethan Muniz each had two RBIs each and Gavin Rutherford had one RBI. Sosolik hit a home run to help Cinco clinch the game one five inning win.

Cinco Ranch followed that up with a 13-4 win, where they got contributions on the mound from a number of contributors.

Charlie Atkinson started and went three innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out two and walking three before Thomas Guy came on in relief for three innings, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out two and walking two. Rutherford closed out the game, pitching the final inning, not allowing any hits and striking out one. Cinco scored three runs in the second inning before breaking the game open in the third with an eight run inning. They closed things out with one run in both the fourth and fifth inning, while not allowing Hightower to get another run the rest of the way.

Rutherford hit a home run and had three RBIs to lead the Cougars, Brock DeYoung, Connor Ficarra and Paul Acosta had two RBIs while Franco, Sosolik and Rainer Castillo had one RBI in the game as the Cougars dominantly won in two. The wins brought the Cougars to 29-4 on the year.

Up next for Cinco Ranch will be Memorial, which comes off a three game bi-district series win over Bellaire. The Mustangs have a record of 19-14-1 on the season and finished third in District 17-6A.

Tompkins started off their series with a 12-3 win over George Ranch before closing things out on Friday with a 10-0 win.

Ty Dagley was strong on the mound in the Falcons first game, allowing two runs over 4.2 innings while striking out six and walking three on five hits. Tompkins had Dagley relieved by Kaden Bertrand, who pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out two, before Daniel Deaton came on to close things out, pitching a clean seventh and not allowing a run.

Dagley also added two RBIs in the game, as did Drew Markel and Landon West, who both had home runs in the game. Cooper Markle also added a home run and had one RBI while Ivan Gomez added an RBI for the Falcons. Tompkins followed that up with a big 10-0 win, advancing to the area round for the sixth straight season, as the Falcons are now 24-6-1 on the season.

Up next, the Falcons will get Cy-Creek, which comes off a sweep of Heights in the bi-district round. The Cougars are 11-19-1 on the season and finished in fourth place out of District 17-6A.

Katy was dominant in its sweep of Fort Bend Austin, beating the Bulldogs 12-0 and 16-6 for two run rule wins.

Caleb Koger took the mound in game one of the series and never let Austin get into it, shutting Austin out over four innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three, Aaron Brashear came in for the final inning for Katy, striking out all three of the batters he faced. Cole Kaase led Katy with four RBIs, while Nayden Ramirez drove in three and Brady Englett, Graham Laxton, Andrew Hilton and Reese Ruderman each had one run driven in. Katy sored seen runs in the first inning before scoring three in each of the second and third to put things out of reach.

In game two, Lucas Moore toed the rubber for katy and went three innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking none. Cole Kaase pitched the final two innings for Katy, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out four.

Englett led the way offensively for Katy, driving in five and hitting two home runs. Ramirez drove in three along with Laxton, while AJ Atkinson drove in two and Sutton Hull and Josh Dunayvzan drove in one.

Katy’s offense was hot all day in the win, scoring two in the first and four in the fourth before truly breaking the game open in the third with a five-run inning. Katy followed that up with four runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth. The wins improved Katy to 24-6-3 on the season as the Tigers advanced to the area round for the fourth straight season.

Katy advances to play Cy-Fair in the area round. The Bobcats are 20-14 on the season and won District 17-6A. The Bobcats come off a sweep of Westside in the bi-district round.

Seven Lakes was the lone team from Katy ISD to lose in the first round, putting up a strong fight against the No. 4 team in the state in Ridge Point but falling in two games, 10-0 and 3-2, nearly forcing a third game in the series but ultimately getting swept.

After losing 10-0 the Spartans gave Ridge Point all they could handle in game two of the series. Lawson Moreno started the game and went 5.1 innings for Seven Lakes on the mound, allowing just three hits and two runs, neither of which was earned, while striking out three.

Travis Berra pitched .2 hitless innings as well while Collin Mills pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits.

Seven Lakes went ahead in the first inning on a Miguel Acosta RBI double, but eventually gave up the lead to Ridge Point. But the Spartans came back to tie it up in the sixth inning when Taylor Tiedt drove in a run on a single. The game went to extra innings, where Ridge Point was able to get a run across in the eighth on a passed ball, and Seven Lakes was unable to tie things in the bottom of the inning.

The Spartans season ends with a record of 19-14 overall, and they clinched their second straight playoff appearance as they look to continue to build off this year.
