Posted

This month marks the 80th anniversary of both the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show and Katy Rodeo. They began in 1943.

The livestock show runs from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Feb. 14-18. The rodeo begins at 7 p.m. Feb. 16-18. All events are at the Gerald D. Young Agricultural Sciences Center, 5801 Katy Hockley Cutoff Road. The livestock show and rodeo run concurrently, but they are separate events organized by separate entities. Katy ISD oversees the livestock show. The Katy Rodeo oversees the rodeo, with proceeds benefiting the Katy ISD FFA.

Rodeo activities include barrel racing, bull riding, and a calf scramble. The rodeo also features a carnival and a buyer’s luncheon for those looking to purchase livestock raised by Katy ISD FFA students. Prospective buyers can see the livestock at the livestock show. Sponsorships are available for the rodeo. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the website katyrodeo.org.

Other annual community events have been set up to support the livestock show and rodeo. The Texas Chili Cookoff, proceeds of which benefit the Katy FFA, is set for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 11 in the American Furniture Warehouse parking lot, 500 Pin Oak Road. For more information, call the Katy Ara Chamber of Commerce at 281-391-5289.

The annual Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show and Rodeo Parade is set for 9:30 a.m. Feb. 18. The parade begins at the Academy Sports Complex-Rhodes Stadium parking lot, 1733 Katy Fort Bend Road, and runs south on Katyland Drive, then west on Highway Boulevard, ending at the Katy High School campus, 6331 Highway Blvd. For more parade information, including sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, email parade committee at KatyRodeoParade@gmail.com.

Yet while the livestock show and rodeo are contemporary events, they do have an interesting history. Diana Robinson Elder, daughter of show founder L.D. Robinson, shared some photos of the people and places of the livestock show’s past.
