Katy ISD, Royal send athletes to state meet, Seven Lakes girls win Region III meet

Katy ISD will send a number of athletes to the Class 5A and Class 6A state track and field meet after big performances at the Region III meet.

The Seven Lakes girls won the region for the third straight season, finishing with 72 points while the next closest competitor, Shadow Creek, finished with 56 points. On the boys side, Seven Lakes finished third with 42 points while Humble won the event with 130 points.

Seven Lakes’ Alyssa Tate finished third in the 100-meter dash to advance to state, running it in 11.62 seconds and Spartans senior Haley Tate won gold in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.15 seconds.

Katy’s Sarash Pantophlet finished second in the 800-meter run, finishing with a time of two minutes, 16.68 seconds and Seven Lakes’ Avary Catchings finished with a time of two minutes, 17.02 seconds. Cinco Ranch’s Alison Mueller-Hickler took silver in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11 minutes, 18.30 seconds.

Mayde Creek’s Simone Ballard continued her domination of the 100 and 300-meter hurdles, winning the region in both with times of 13.62 seconds and 40.98 while Katy’s Kaycee McCoy came in third with a time of 13.69 seconds.

In the field events, Seven Lakes’ Janey Campbell took gold in the shot put with a throw of 42-5.0 and took second in the discus, with a throw of 135-09. Seven Lakes’ also went one and two in the pole vault, with Lauren Schmitt winning it with a jump of 12 feet and Audrey Tupper also jumped 12 feet to finish second. Tompkins’ Tolu Odetola took a third place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 38-6.75.

On the boys side of 6A, Tay’Shawn Wilson finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.56 seconds. Seven Lakes’ Ruben Rojas Betanzos won the 1600-meter run and finished third in the 3200-meter run with times of four minutes, 13.74 seconds and nine minutes, 13.64 seconds respectively.

Mayde Creek made it to state in the 400-meter relay, finishing third with a time of 40.93 seconds and Morton Ranch finished second in the 800-meter relay with a time of one minute, 28 seconds.

In field events, Matthew Rueff won the shot put with a throw of 63-11.0 and Ian Flynt took second in the discus with a throw of 173-11. Tompkins’ Matthew Kumar won the pole vault with a jump of 16 feet, 4.75 inches while Tompkins Jordan Keys won the long jump with a jump of 25 feet, 1.5 inches.

In Class 5A on the girls side, Jordan’s Aloni Ransom took the silver in the 200-meter dash, running a time of 2.78 seconds and Jordan’ s Tiyan Ogbeide finished third in the 400-meter dash after running 55.84 seconds and Ogbiede won the 800-meter run with a time of two minutes, 16.22 seconds while Addison Sutton took third in the event, running two minutes, 18.87 seconds, Sutton also advanced in the 1600 meters, finishing third with a time of five minutes, 13.43 seconds.

On the boys side of 5A, Paetow’s Toheeb Oladipupo placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.72, Jordan’s Sheldon Peters advanced in the shot put, placing second with a throw of 55-11.50 and Paetow’s Charles Chukwu finished third in the discus with a throw of 171-07 as both advanced to the state meet.

In Class 4A, Royal’s Diamond Barrett won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.85 seconds and Siryah Frebez finished third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.02 to advance. Royal’s 400-meter relay also advanced to state by winning the event with a time of 48.67 seconds.
