“That’s what our coach preaches every day,” said senior safety Kentrell Webb. “That’s our motto is to be consistent and keep getting better. We know if we want to compete against the best that’s what we have to do. We’re united as one and if we continue to be consistent, show up to practice and do what we need to do, no one is going to beat us.”

Paetow tops Morton Ranch, continues hot start to season

Posted

Paetow’s goal is to be a great team this season.

The Panthers know there is one big difference between good teams and those that reach an elite level.

Getting better every week.

After getting to the Class 5A, Div. I area round last season, Paetow is looking for another step up this season and has started off on the right foot.

Paetow (2-0) started off the season strong against Barbers Hill with a 41-20 win over Barbers Hill and wanted to keep that going in week two when they faced Katy ISD foe Morton Ranch.

The Panthers did just that, rattling off 389 yards of offense in a 43-14 win over the Mavericks 1-1) to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

“We challenged them at the end of last week to keep getting better,” Paetow head coach B.J. Gotte said. “Good teams continue get better week after week and we told them ‘you need to be better next week than you were last week.’ I felt like we did that and so that was good to see. We were able to match their (Morton Ranch’s) intensity early and it was really good. I was glad to see them come out and continue to improve.”

It didn’t take long for Paetow to get rolling. The Panthers forced a three-and-out on Morton Ranch’s first drive and then on the Panther’s first play from scrimmage, Jacob Brown took a handoff and broke a run 65 yards for a touchdown less than two minutes into the game.

Five minutes later Brown added to his tally with a 3-yard touchdown and a he was at it again in the second quarter as he broke off another long run, this one for 56 yards and his third touchdown of the night.

“I just wanted to show the talent that I have and how great these offensive lineman really are,” Brown said. “I couldn’t have done it without those guys or without CJ (Dumas), he did a great job of calling the reads. I was just listening to what coach preached all week, which is reading our keys. I read that and the lineman opened it up for me, the holes were there.”

Paetow scored twice more in the second quarter off of two passes from CJ Dumas, one 18 yards to Justin Stevenson and one to Kole Wilson for 25 yards as the Panthers went into the locker room with a 33-0 lead.

Morton Ranch struggled to create any kind of offense in the first half, but started to find more of a rhythm in the third quarter as Josh Johnsons settled into the game.

Morton Ranch picked up three first downs on their first drive of the second half and although the Mavericks didn’t come away with points on the possession, they found success through the air after a first half where they could not get anything going on the ground.

After another Paetow touchdown on a pass from Dumas to Stevenson, Morton Ranch was finally able to get on the board, driving the ball down the field and getting a touchdown on a 17 yard pass from Johnson to Karsten Christopher Jr.

Paetow got a field goal in the fourth quarter and with the backups in, Mike Gerald threw a touchdown pass to Santana Scott for Morton Ranch’s second score of the game before the Panthers ran time out.

Gotte liked what he saw from his team but also knew there was room to improve for next week.

“We were more consistent up front with our offensive line and defensively we did a good job with our fits on run plays while the back end guys stay on top of routes,” Gotte said. “We just need to do a better job with pre snap penalties on offense, that’s something I challenged them with at the end of the game. Defensively we also lost our edge a little bit there to start the second half. It’s like I told them, you don’t ever take wins for granted, enjoy them, but we also have to understand we have a lot of room to grow.”

Morton Ranch will be up against Alief Hastings next week while Paetow will start District 10-5A, Div. I play against Richmond Foster.

Just like last week, the Panthers will enjoy the victory, but they’re focused on bigger goals.

“This is a special group,” Webb said. “I think we are going to be the best team to come through Paetow, offensively and defensively. We have to be ready for district but if we keep getting better we can get to Dallas, that’s what we preach, we’re going to Dallas.”
