Katy feels like it has a point to prove in these playoffs.

The Tigers want to make a statement, and so far in the first two rounds, they are well on their way to doing so.

Katy followed up its sweep of Elkins in the bi-district round with a sweep of Jersey Village in area, beating the Falcons 7-0 in game one and 7-4 in game two to take the series and advance to the regional quarterfinals.

“The last four games of district, we were playing not to lose,” said senior first baseman Jhonnatan Ferrebus. “After we took that last district loss, we just turned it on. We were out for blood to start these playoffs, we want to prove that we are one of the best in every game we play.”

Ferrebus played a big part in making that statement, driving in two runs to lead the Katy offense in its game two win. Ferrebus wasn’t alone in his big day though, as Caleb Koger was strong on the mound to keep the Tigers in it throughout, going 5.2 innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two batters.

“I’ve just been trying to be patient and make every pitch count,” said Koger, who threw a no-hitter in his previous outing against Elkins. “I don’t think about the importance of a game or who I’m up against or anything like that. The only thing I do is try to go out there and throw strikes and get ahead in the count as much as I can so my defense can make plays behind me.”

Katy got the lead in the second inning after Brady Englett reach on a hit by pitch and came around to score on an error, but the Katy offense struggled in the early innings and Jersey Village took the lead in the fifth off a fielders choice and an RBI single.

But Katy immediately responded. The Tigers got two runners on base in the fifth inning and Ferrebus took advantage of it, driving a triple to center field to drive in both and Nayden Ramirez followed it up with an RBI single to make it 4-2 Katy.

“He kept throwing me curveballs outside and I noticed it early in my plate appearances,” Ferrebus said. I made the adjustment and scooted up on the plate and was able to get my barrell further out of the zone. They threw the pitch again and I was able to take advantage of it.”

The Tigers capped thing off with three more runs in the sixth, with Graham Laxton driving in two on a triple and Ryan George hitting a sacrifice fly.

The Tigers advance to play Taylor in the regional quarterfinals, date and times to be determined. The two teams split the season series with both winning one game.

Jersey Village scored two in the seventh but that was all as the Tigers clinched the series.

“We’ve just been practicing hard and continuing to get better,” Koger said. “We know we have to get better every day and improve if we want to achieve our goals. We have to go as hard as we can.”
