Tompkins tops Jordan, inches closer to playoff berth

Posted

Tompkins run game has continued to improve this season.

The Falcons have leaned on their ground and pound method throughout the season, and the teams running backs, offensive line and quarterback have been up to the task as they have gotten better with the attack every single game.

That run game was on full display Friday, as the Falcons pounded the ball on the ground the entire game against Jordan, rushing for 538 yards as a team in a huge 65-14 win, as the Falcons inched closer to locking down a playoff spot with one week remaining in the regular season.

“We came in with a game plan to grind it out tonight and to pound the rock at every opportunity,” said junior running back Caleb Blocker. “We wanted to keep running and running and going right at them and it worked because they wore out. We really just went out and executed the gameplan and attacked them as much as we could.”

Blocker was front and center for the Falcons performance tonight, as he took advantage of every opportunity, rushing for 256 yards and four touchdowns on just nine carries to help lead Tompkins to the win.

And it was Blocker who got things started, as Tompkins needed just three plays on their first drive to go 70 yards, with Blocker scoring on a 6-yard run to give the Falcons the lead.

The Tompkins defense then made itself felt as well, as Cody Chapman intercepted Jordan and set the Falcons offense up inside the Warriors 30. Blocker again took advantage by scoring on a 13-yard run.

They continued to pile it on in the first quarter, as Wyatt Young ran in a 30-yard touchdown, before Jordan finally responded on a 16-yard score from Colin Willetts to Ryker Atkins, making things a 21-7 game after one quarter.

“The best part of the night was watching the guys out in front of the runners and the way they competed and blocked,” said Tompkins head coach Todd McVey. “The offensive line did a great job and Caleb did a great job of exploding through tackles and getting downfield, but the guys blocking down for him, that’s exactly what we preach and they did a great job.”

Tompkins picked up right where they left off in the second quarter. Caleb Komolafe ran in a 3-yard score before Blocker scored on a 66-yard run and again on an 80-yard run, with the Falcons intercepting Jordan on both of its possessions in between those scores. And the Falcons scored once more on a Young 4-yard pass to Noah Coughran as the Falcons ran away with things before halftime.

The Falcons ended the game with three interceptions and severely limited a Jordan pass game that had been one of the better attacks in district.

“The guys really realized how much better you can play when you communicate with one another and they’ve gotten much better with it as the year has gone on,” McVey said. “It’s been much better communicating and just making sure that everyone knows exactly what they are supposed to do and where they should be across the board.”

Young added a third touchdown on the Falcons first drive of the third quarter with a 33-yard pass to Dylan Rodriguez and Tompkins added a field goal in the third before Jordan got its last score in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run by Zion Jones before Chris Gilber Jr. sealed things with a 69-yard score for Tompkins.

“Really the biggest thing we did right tonight was just get our preparation right,” said senior safety Cody Chapman, who had two interceptions. “We prepped a lot all week and we knew before the game that we had to be disciplined and play that way. We were just breaking on balls all night, the front seven did great and it just led to a great game from everyone.”

The win leads to a very good chance that Tompkins makes the playoffs, but they can seal a playoff berth next week with a win over Paetow.

“We have to come out next week and have a great Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,” McVey said. “The kids understand that and they know we have to focus on us. That’s the one constant and that’s how we have to prepare.”
