Donna Jean Lowry Powell (88) of Katy, Texas, formerly of Ashland, KY. Peacefully passed away in the early morning hours of October 20, 2021, at her Colonial Oaks Assisted Living and Memory Care of Katy home. Donna was born February 28, 1933, to Colonel Garrett Lowry and Gustava (Gussie) Alexander Lowry in New Boston Ohio just prior to relocating to Ashland.
Donna was a graduate of Ashland High School and attended Eastern Kentucky University. While Donna primarily spent most of her time maintaining the home, she also made time to work on various part-time projects at Ashland Oil. Her love of music was always a constant in her life whether it was playing the clarinet in the band or playing the piano over 5 decades or more recently leading the residents at Colonial Oaks in singing many of her favorite songs, especially God Bless America. During their retirement years, Donna and husband Bill devoted much of their time to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Katy Lodge 2628 where Donna was a past Texas Elks State Sweetheart.
Donna was preceded in death by both parents and her husband of 60 years, William H. Powell. She is survived by a son, Steven Powell and wife Terry of The Woodlands, Texas; a daughter Ann Elizabeth Powell of Katy, Texas; and two granddaughters that she adored, Erica J. Powell and Leslie A. Powell of Houston, Texas. Also surviving is her brother William Lowry of Barboursville, WV and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by both family and friends.
As proud Elks, both Donna and Bill always had a soft spot for children but especially children with special needs. They were strong supporters of the Texas Elks Children's Camp for Special Needs Children. In lieu of flowers, anyone who wishes to honor Donna with memoriam may do so through the Texas Elks Children’s Services, Inc. (TECSI), 1961 FM 1586, Gonzales, Texas.
Arrangements for a memorial service are pending and will be announced through social media.
