Following its impressive 24-19 win over Katy on Nov. 5, Tompkins has jumped ahead three spots in this week’s Houston area high school football media poll.

The 6-0 Falcons are ranked No. 2 in Class 6A, overtaking the Tigers for that spot. Katy (5-1) is ranked No. 5 after suffering its first district loss since Nov. 8, 2008.

Two other Katy ISD teams remain ranked in this week’s polls. Taylor (6-1) remains No. 14 in the Class 6A poll. The Mustangs’ only loss this season is a 28-0 setback to Tompkins on Oct. 23. In the Class 5A poll, Paetow (5-1) fell two spots to No. 6 after its first loss of the season to No. 1 Richmond Foster last week, 28-10.

The rankings, organized by Houston Chronicle high school sports coordinator Adam Coleman, are selected by 12 media voters in the Houston area, representing the Katy Times, Houston Chronicle, Sealy News, Fort Bend Herald, Texan Live, VYPE and the Lone Star Christian Sports Network, among others.

North Shore and Katy had been the top two Class 6A teams all this season before this week’s poll. Tompkins has an open week this week. Katy plays Taylor in another marquee district matchup on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium.

Taylor beat Cinco Ranch, 51-14, last week.

Paetow has an open week this week after its district playoff play-in game against Angleton scheduled for Saturday was postponed due to a COVID-19 case in Angleton ISD.
