KARE – Katy Area Retired Educators – will host Hooky Day on Wednesday, August 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Community Room in Legacy Stadium, 5070 Franz Rd in Katy.
KARE is kicking off the 2024-25 year with the event, designed to recruit new members. Any TRS (Teacher Retirement System) retiree is invited to attend. Free refreshments, door prizes, and cruise-themed fun will be provided.
Hooky Day is an opportunity to learn about the organization, its mission and activities, and its committees. About KARE: KARE is a local chapter of the TRTA-Texas Retired Teacher Association. The chapter currently has over 300 members.
KARE provides college scholarships to graduating seniors in Katy ISD who plan to become future teachers. In May 2024, KARE awarded 8 scholarships of $1,200 each. KARE also sponsors a children’s book project in which members donate and collect new and gently used books to donate to children in the Katy community. KARE members also donated their time in community service. Last year, KARE members gave 67,869 hours of volunteer service in the community. KARE earned 2nd place in TRTA District 4 for community service.
This year’s theme is Cruising on the U.S.S. KARE. KARE meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Members will “cruise” to a different destination each month. Members can enter a raffle to win a free cruise on Princess or Royal Caribbean.
