Seven Lakes’ Kim wins golf state championship

Maelynn Kim added a major accomplishment on Tuesday, winning the Class 6A individual state golf championship after two terrific days of golf at Legacy Hills Country Club.

Kim won the tournament by shooting four under and winning a three way playoff after three golfers finished with the same score after two days.

She was very consistent over the course of the two days, shooting 70 in both round one and round two to finish four under for the tournament. She went into a playoff with Vandegrift’s Sydney Givens and Lake Travis’ Kate Pickrell, where it took just one hole for Kim to clinch the state championship. Givens finished second and Pickrell finished third as they went on to play another playoff hole.

Kim’s performance also propelled Seven Lakes to an eighth place finish as a team. Elle Astete was the second best performer on the team, finishing 41st at state by shooting 12 over for the tournament, she was followed by Kay Song, who finished 18 over over the course of the two days, finishing tied for 52nd. Krisna Mahendran finished 23 over for the tournament to tie for 63rd and Sydney Conover shot 32 over to finish 69th.

Vandegrift took the overall team title by shooting a collective five over while Kingwood took second and The Woodlands finished in third.

Kim came into the state tournament confident after shooting a 64 to win the Region III-6A tournament and that paid off for the state winner. The senior, who won the district tournament each of the past two years, capped off her high school career with the ultimate prize.
