Spartans sweep 19-6A team golf titles

Spartans sweep 19-6A team golf titles

Seven Lakes swept the District 19-6A boys and girls team golf titles at Blackhorse golf courses in Cypress, ensuring the Spartans will be a force at the Region III tournament in Spring later this month.

The Seven Lakes boys won with a two-day score of 612, outlasting Tompkins, which finished 19 strokes behind. Seven Lakes’ girls won with a score of 626, overcoming Cinco Ranch, which posted a 675.

The top two teams and first two medalists not on an advancing team qualify to regionals. The girls tournament is April 19-20, followed by the boys tournament April 21-22.

Seven Lakes freshman Shaun Nair won the individual boys district title with a total of 142, besting Taylor senior Kevin Kim by six strokes. Nair shot a 72 in round one and 70 in round two. Kim was the leader by one stroke after day one but shot a 77 to Nair’s 70 on day two as the freshman showed impressive poise.

The two boys medalists qualifying to regionals were Kim and Cinco Ranch junior Holden Kittelberger. Kittelberger finished in a tie for fifth with a score of 157.

The Seven Lakes boys team includes Nair, senior Van Miller (tied-3rd, 153), junior Nikko Taggart (tied-5th, 157), junior Adam Bodine and senior Kade Kalisek.

The Tompkins boys team, which qualified for regionals for the first time in program history, includes senior Gregory Dupont (tied-3rd, 153), junior Diego Montes (tied-8th, 158), junior Colt Tenpenny (tied-8th, 158), junior Jeff Borchert and senior Preston Remlinger.

Seven Lakes senior Lauren Nguyen won the individual girls district title with a two-day score of 147, posting a 74 after the first round and a 73 in the second round and eluding Cinco Ranch junior Mallorie Luitwieler by two strokes.

Tompkins sophomore Annika Choi finished fifth with a score of 165 (83-82) to take one of the medalist qualifying spots. Taylor’s Alice Yoon finished eighth with a 172 (84-88) to earn the other medalist regional qualifying bid.

Seven Lakes’ girls team consists of Nguyen, sophomore Maelynn Kim (third, 151), senior Grayson Heilman (fourth, 159), freshman Floortje Rademaker (sixth, 169) and freshman Krisna Mahendran. Spartans claimed four of the top six spots individually.

Cinco Ranch’s girls team consists of Luitwieler, sophomore Abbey Stegeman (seventh, 170), sophomore Chole Dang, senior Olivia Predmore and senior Erika Alvarez.
