“We’ve all been putting in work and now we finally are to where we have to be even better now,” Davis said. “We have to make sure we focus on the day in front of us and not look ahead, work as hard as we can and listen to the coaches. If we do that, we are going to really get better.”

Tigers excited for new season

Posted

Katy is ready to take the next step.

With a good mix of returners and newcomers, of youth and experience and of hunger and motivation, Katy is entering the season wanting to prove themselves, and wanting to one up what they did last year.

That was evident Monday during the team’s first day of practice this season, as the Tigers sprinted from drill to drill, competed with one another and prepared for the season by attacking the day, just like the Katy coaching staff expects the group to attack every practice and every day.

“It was a good day,” said Katy head coach Gary Joseph. “I think some of them were still feeling their way around, maybe didn’t eat breakfast before they came out here, but it’s part of the process you go through every year. They have to understand that it’s not just about surviving the practice, you have to be getting better out here.”

The Tigers were excited to be back on the field and gearing up for the season. With a new group they are trying to improve every day and be prepared to make another run at a district title and another run deep in the playoffs.

“It’s unexplainable really, just the greatest feeling getting back out here,” said senior wide receiver JR Ceyanes. “We’ve been lifting, conditioning, doing everything we could, but it’s nice to finally put a helmet back on and finally play some football again and just be back out here.”

Seth Davis felt the same way, the senior running back has been working hard to get himself prepared for this moment and be ready for his final high school season.

“We’ve all been putting in work and now we finally are to where we have to be even better now,” Davis said. “We have to make sure we focus on the day in front of us and not look ahead, work as hard as we can and listen to the coaches. If we do that, we are going to really get better.”

A big part of the Katy culture is working hard, listening to coaches and not getting too focused on the future, and both Davis and Ceyanes are working to uphold that culture with the younger players, and they’re hoping that culture along with the teams talent will lead to plenty of wins this year. Ceyanes especially has focused on that part of things with the graduation of so many in the receiving room from last year.

“When I was named a captain, I knew that that was going to be a big part of this year for me,” Ceyanes said. “I’m treated with a lot more respect now and people know that I’m trying to help them. So when I say something now, people listen and they try and get better from it. That’s a bi thing for me and I just hope to be able to push some people in the right direction.”
