The Board of Trustees of the Katy Independent School District held a special board meeting on Monday night, resulting in the termination of Tompkins High School social studies teacher James Stone for cause. The board directed Superintendent Ken Gregorski to send written notice to Stone of his termination.
Stone was arrested early on the morning of May 13th at his Katy area residence on nine counts of possession of child pornography, according to Wesley Wittig, second district attorney for Fort Bend County in an email sent to the Katy Times that day.
In other action – following a closed meeting and consultation with the board’s attorney -- the trustees also discussed the district’s capital project procurement process. Micki Morris, a partner in the law firm of Rogers, Morris & Grover L.L.P., whose firm does work for Katy ISD, conducted a special training session for the board, explaining the Texas state laws governing the construction bidding process for school districts. Morris is a graduate of Taylor High School and has worked with KISD for over 15 years, she said. She praised KISD as the “gold standard” and called the district “an attractive owner” for architects, contractors and subcontractors, stating that the district has never had a construction-related lawsuit nor a formal bid protest – unlike most districts with whom her firm works.
Because this was deemed a “special meeting,” the public comments portion of the meeting was limited to discussion of posted agenda items only, with no discussion of non-agenda items. There were no public comments speakers.
Future board meetings include:
· Work study meeting on June 17.
· Regular board meeting on June 24.
