Shannon Chavez of Katy has been awarded a New Teacher Scholarship from Teachers of Tomorrow, the nation’s largest alternative certification provider. The organization awarded 20 scholarships to the next generation of teachers in several states in which it operates.
“Our children today are the future leaders of tomorrow,” Chavez said. “I want to be a part of something greater than myself.”
Chavez is one of four aspiring teachers in the Greater Houston area to receive the scholarship. With this scholarship, Teachers of Tomorrow covers the entire program fee to reduce the financial burden of changing careers.
Other Houston-area teachers receiving scholarships were Yasmin Moreno, of Humble; Dominique Shaw, of Houston; and Braden Baikauskas, of Kingwood.
Teachers of Tomorrow said its goal is to supply schools with high-quality, passionate teachers to make a difference in the classroom.
Two students from Katy have made the Fall 2022 dean’s lists at their respective colleges.
Samuel Lowell McDaniel, a third-year performing arts student, made the dean’s list at Iowa State University in Ames. McDaniel is one of more than 10,200 Iowa State students who have been recognized for outstanding academic achievement by being named to the dean's list. These students must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours of graded course work.
Robert Simmons made the dean’s list at Kansas Wesleyan University in Lincoln. Students earning at least a 3.75 grade point average (on a 4.00 scale) while completing a full-time course load of at least 12 credit hours of graded work (pass/fail courses are not included) are eligible.
