The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office Project Lifesaver Program teamed up with the Harris County Sheriff’s office to conduct Project Lifesaver training for the Katy Police Department. This initiative comes after the Fort Bend and Harris county sheriff’s departments conducted training for the Katy ISD Police Department to become a search team.

Project Lifesaver is a free resource for individuals who suffer from cognitive disabilities such as Autism, Alzheimer’s or dementia who are prone to wandering. The individual is registered with their local law enforcement agency and receive a bracelet that is equipped with radio-frequency technology. In the event they wander, law enforcement has their information ahead of time and can track the individual’s bracelet using the latest technology to bring them home safely.

In a two-part training session, Katy Police officers learned about the Project Lifesaver program and were given a written test. The second session consisted of hypothetical scenarios where officers were put to the test on their capabilities using a receiver to find the missing subject during a practice search.

“Project Lifesaver is a great resource for our community and we are excited to share it with our surrounding law enforcement partners,” Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan said. “In situations involving people with cognitive disabilities, time is of the essence.”
