After leading the Cougars in a tough road win, University of Houston senior guard Kyler Edwards was honored as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
It was the second weekly award for Edwards during his collegiate career and his first as a Cougar in The American.
It also was the second straight week in which a Cougar earned the honor as graduate forward Josh Carlton received the honor on Jan. 10.
In the Cougars’ lone game of the week, Edwards led all players and posted career highs with 29 points and seven 3-pointers in a 66-64 win at Tulsa on Saturday night.
Playing all but 105 seconds in the win, Edwards buried a pair of 3-pointers in the first half after starting point guard Jamal Shead was sidelined for the rest of the game with an ankle injury with Houston leading 7-5.
With 7:19 remaining in the first half and Houston leading 17-11, the Arlington, Texas, native scored 10 of the Cougars’ next 12 points over a four-and-a-half minute stretch to give Houston a 29-18 lead.
He topped his previous collegiate high of 24 points at Kansas State while playing with Texas State on Jan. 14. 2020. He bested his personal high of six 3-pointers, set earlier this season vs. Wisconsin in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational Semifinals in Las Vegas on Nov. 23.
This season, Edwards leads all available Cougars and ranks 11th in The American with 13.2 points per game. He is one of only four players to rank among the league’s Top-13 leaders in both scoring and rebounding.
Temple’s Jahlil White was named the league’s Freshman of the Week. David DeJulius (Cincinnati), Vance Jackson (East Carolina), Kendric Davis (SMU), Nick Jourdain (Temple) and Jalen Cook (Tulane) were named to the Honor Roll.
