Katy ISD named its Student-Athletes of the Year, with Cinco Ranch’s Gavin Rutherford and Seven Lakes’ Maelynn Kim taking home the honors for the 2022-2023 school year for their efforts both on and off the field.

“Every year the selection process consists of exceptionally talented student-athletes who demonstrate remarkable prowess in the classroom as well as in the field,” said Lance Carter, Executive Director of Athletics.  “These students are true role models at their schools and in their communities.”

Rutherford finished his high school career as one of the best two sport athletes to come out of Cinco Ranch in school history and in Katy ISD history. He holds the career records in Katy ISD history as well as Cinco Ranch history for passing yards, touchdowns, completions and attempts. He led the Cougars to a 14-9 record over the past two seasons, with the Cougars advancing to the regional semifinals both seasons.

Over the course of his senior year he completed 209 of 340 passes with a completion percentage of 61.5% while throwing for 3,326 yards and 32 touchdowns to just six interceptions. He averaged over 255 yards per game through the air over the course of the season. Rutherford was named District MVP for his efforts.

On top of his efforts on the football field, Rutherford was a three-year captain on the Cougars baseball team and helped lead Cinco Ranch to its best ever season, with the team reaching the regional semifinals. Rutherford was a key part of that team, hitting in the No. 3 spot, he also led Cinco into the regional semifinals by pitching a complete game shutout in game three of the regional quarterfinals against Ridge Point. Rutherford has signed with Stephen F. Austin University to continue his football and academic career.

Kim earned the honor of athlete of the year after a huge career that was capped off with a state championship in his senior season. She finished her high school career as a three-time district champion as well.

Over the course of this season, Kim won the District 19-6A championship before winning both the Region III-6A Championship and Class 6A State Championship as well. She led Seven Lakes to a first place finish at the district championships and also the Region III tournament before the Spartans finished in eighth place at the state tournament.

Off the course, she was a top student at Seven Lakes where she showed her dedication. Kim is continuing her golf and academic career at the University of Houston.
