GEORGETOWN – Seven Lakes had belief all season.

The Spartans had to go through adversity and were tested every step of the way, but they believed they had what it took to get to Georgetown and win.

That belief never wavered, but on Friday, things went against the Spartans and despite fighting for 80 minutes, Seven Lakes (19-4-5) fell to Prosper (25-2-2) 3-0 in the Class 6A State Final, ending the Spartans season after a great run where they went their furthest in the playoffs in over a decade.

“They fought for everything this year and went through so much adversity and I’m so proud of them for getting to this point,” said Seven Lakes head coach Kaitlyn Eidson. “There were only two or three starters returning from last years team and so this year really brought them together and they bonded. This team never stopped fighting.”

Prosper came out with the wind at their back and had the greater share of possession in the first half. Both teams struggled creating chances, but Prosper struck first, finding the back of the net when Reagan Roberts lifted in a cross that went over the Seven Lakes defense and fell perfectly to Brooklyn Miller, who headed it into the corner of the net. The Eagles continued to bring pressure for the rest of the half, but Seven Lakes was able to hold on and go into the locker room only trailing 1-0.

Seven Lakes tried to fight back into the game in the second half, but Prosper kept control of the game and added a second in the 62nd minute on a Roberts left footed shot from just inside the 18-yard box. The Eagles added a third in the 74th minute, when Brooklyn Miller headed in a goal off a corner that sealed the game.

“Prosper has such a strong attack because it’s all 11 players and they build from the back, even their center backs, they’re a huge part of it,” Eidson said. “We felt confident in our plan coming in, but it’s a credit to Prosper because they found a way. It’s a game of 80 minutes, not just moments and they were great today.”
For Seven Lakes though, this was an accomplishment. It was a team with just seven seniors and three senior starters. Those senior leaders paved the way and helped a young team get all the way to the state tournament.

“I just hope that we as seniors left behind some good traditions and a legacy of kindness,” said senior captain Wagoner Towsen. “We wanted everyone to make the most with this team and no matter if you’re a senior or a freshman for you to be welcome. Everyone on this team was so close and I just hope that continues.”

The Spartans will bring back a plethora of talent next year, with most of their starters and many impact players coming back. Getting to this point was huge, and they will be striving for the same heights in the future.

“They got to be here and they got to have those experiences,” Eidson said. “When the varsity players experience it and then our sub varsity players get to play them in practice and see their friends go to state it makes them believe they can do it too. It’s big for a program, but the biggest thing is I’m just so proud of this group.”
