Chief Justin Jurek, Fort Bend County Fire Marshal, salutes as the bell is rung in memory of lives lost on September 11, 2001 – rung in three sets of three rings – during Fort Bend County’s “Heroes of Honor” observance at the Historic Courthouse at 301 Jackson in Richmond.
Hosted by Fort Bend County Judge KP George and the Veterans Service Office, the event, commemorating the sacrifices of first responders and military service members and reflecting on the events of that day 24 years ago, drew almost a hundred community leaders, families, veterans, and members of the public for a powerful and solemn tribute.
“This was my generation’s Pearl Harbor,” said Mark Ned, veterans service officer for Fort Bend County.
Guest speaker Jurek delivered personal reflections on courage, public service, and the legacy of those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
“Today we honor a day of unimaginable loss, tremendous courage, and unwavering resilience,” said Chief Jurek. “They rushed towards danger while others sought safety.”
The event included a moment of silence, the presentation of colors, and a moving musical tribute which accompanied a photo montage of the events of September 11, 2001, as well as a letter from Senator John Cornyn.
