Cinco Ranch’s O’Brien named district MVP for second straight season

Cinco Ranch’s O’Brien named district MVP for second straight season

For the second straight year, Cinco Ranch’s Kassie O’Brien is taking home the top honors from District 19-6A.

O’Brien was named the district’s MVP for the second straight year, taking the honors by herself for the first time in her final year in Katy ISD after a tremendous year for Cinco Ranch where the Cougars continued to set records.

O’Brien was joined on the superlatives list by Cinco Ranch’s Gabi Martinez, who was named the district’s outstanding hitter, and head coach Danielle Wells, who was named the coach of the year in the district after Cinco Ranch went 35-6 on the season, won their second straight undefeated district title and went on to their third straight regional final.

O’Brien finished the year with 1152 assists, 124 kills, 87 aces, 47 blocks and 260 digs in her senior season to earn MVP honors, while Martinez had 533 kills, 298 digs, 37 assists, 32 blocks and 51 aces to be named the district outstanding hitter.

Tompkins places three players on the superlatives list, with Caelyn Dumas being named co-outstanding setter while Brooklynn Merrell was named the district’s defensive player of the year and Elsa St. Rose was named the newcomer of the year.

The trio were named to the team after helping lead Tompkins to a second-place finish in district with a 30-14 record overall and 13-3 district record while making it to the second round of the playoffs. Dumas finished the year with 606 assists, 318 digs, 250 kills, 68 aces and 33 blocks to earn her honors while Merrell had 615 digs, 375 assists, 77 aces and 11 kills on the year. To be named the district’s defensive player of the year. St. Rose had 379 kills, 274 digs, 19 blocks and 28 aces to earn newcomer of the year honors.

Seven Lakes capped off the superlatives list by placing two. Kate Kuehn shared the outstanding setter honors with Dumas and Heidi Wingate was named the district’s blocker of the year.

The Spartans earned a third-place finish in district with a 29-11 record and an 11-5 record in district while making the playoffs. Wingate ended the season with 231 kills, 106 blocks, 55 digs, 4 assists and 2 aces. Kuehn meanwhile had 1028 assists, 294 digs, 84 kills 33 blocks and 25 aces on the season.

Cinco Ranch placed two on the district’s first team in Addison Goertz and Maggie Finnegan, while Katy had one player on the first team in Kennedy Pike. Tompkins placed two on the first team in Callie Funk and Christin Cowart and Seven Lakes did as well in Megan Chapman and Gracie Hobin. Taylor had three players named to the first team in Madison Barrera, Julia Porath and Eva Kate Simoncic. Jordan led the way on the first team with four selections in Ava Ribakovs, Damisi Osibodu, Emmy Nicholas and Abbie O’Shay. Mayde Creek capped off the first team selections with Ehiose Esechie being named to the team.

For the second team, Cinco place Nicole Teerman and Rahima Kone, Paetow places Arayla Scranton, Katy placed Kaysen Miller, Kaitlin Waak and Ella Chaapel, Tompkins places Emma Elsasser, Seven Lakes placed Lilly Lott, Claudie Deuel and Sofia Deuel, Taylor place Ella Randall and Sydney Herleth, Mayde Creek placed Melanie Gasca and Raquel Cortez and Jordan place Eti Osague.
