The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston has named veteran educator Betty Festa of St. John Paul II Catholic School as the 2025 recipient of the Sally Landram Excellence in Education Award, the school announced in an August 14 press release. Presented annually at the Archdiocesan Back-to-School Mass at the Co-Cathedral, the award honors one exceptional Catholic school teacher who exemplifies strong Catholic faith, deep commitment to community, and dedication to academic excellence. Named in memory of former AGH Superintendent Sally Landram—a tireless advocate for Catholic education—the award celebrates her enduring legacy by recognizing educators who reflect her passion and impact.

Betty Festa has dedicated over four decades to education and has been a part of the St. John Paul II Catholic School (StJPII) since 1994. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Nicholls State College in Thibodaux, Louisiana. “With a gift for explaining complex concepts, Ms. Festa strives to make learning meaningful for every student,” the release said.

One of her former students, Lucas David, shared, “I like how she ingrains the material in my brain. She has taught me how to study and retain information in ways I will carry with me through high school and beyond.”

Teaching in a Catholic school allows Festa to fulfill a greater mission: guiding students not only academically, but spiritually. Principal Rebecca Bogard states, “She not only teaches academic content but also equips students with essential life skills, always thinking ahead to prepare them for the future…Her commitment to personal and professional growth, paired with her servant-hearted faith, plays a vital role in fostering a school culture that aligns with and supports our mission.”

“Festa’s work is a reflection of the values honored by the Sally Landram Award,” the release said. “Her lasting contributions have shaped the lives of countless students and will continue to inspire the StJPII community and beyond.”
