Construction is underway on Harris County Precinct 4's latest flood protection effort, targeting six northeast Katy neighborhoods where localized flooding has been a problem for years.
The projects replace aging, undersized drainage systems with infrastructure built to move more water, which will protect more than 3,100 homes when the work is complete this fall.
The six neighborhoods are:
· Silver Mill, near Morton Road and Greenhouse Rd.
· Sheffield, near FM 529 and Glenstein Drive
· Windsong North and Windsong South. located near Barker Cypress Rd. and Kieth Harrow
· Westlake North, and Westlake South, near N. Fry and Saums
The work involves installation of larger reinforced concrete pipes and box culverts to expand capacity, added underground detention, new storm drains, and roadway repairs. Construction started on the projects on July 17 and is scheduled to be completed by this fall.
The cost for each of the six neighborhood projects ranges from $1 million to $3.5 million per project, a spokesperson for Harris County Precinct 4 said in an email to the Katy Times.
“In Harris County, the next major storm is always on the horizon, and that is why Commissioner Briones works year-round to keep Precinct 4 prepared — from equipping residents with hurricane season guides to hosting preparedness workshops to building stronger flood infrastructure across the precinct,” a Harris County Precinct 4 spokesperson said.
