Improvements underway at Mary Jo Peckham Park

Harris County Precinct 4 has begun upgrades at Mary Jo Peckham Park, 5597 Gardenia in Katy.

The improvements were undertaken in response to a citizen complaint, Precinct 4 Community Engagement Coordinator Angela King said during public comments at the January 26 meeting of Katy’s city council. A spokesperson for Harris County Precinct 4 subsequently confirmed that a constituent had identified suggestions for the intersection at the entrance to the aquatic center.

The project, which started February 12 and is expected to conclude in March 2026, will:

· Extend the existing 5-foot sidewalk east to cross an existing roadside ditch with new asphalt sidewalks that are 8-foot wide

· Add a crosswalk and stop sign for northbound vehicles

· Create a new sidewalk connection to park entrance

· Increase water flow with approximately 60 feet of reinforced concrete pipe in the drainage ditches on the west side of the aquatic center

· Refinish the community center gates and refresh intersection striping

· Add 120 feet of decomposed granite on the eastside of Katy City Park Road to connect the south parking lot with the Aquatic Center entrance

The roads and intersection will remain open during the construction and access may be restricted to alternating traffic flow while the new crosswalk is completed.  The timeline is tentative and weather-dependent, Precinct 4 staff said.

The project is expected to cost $13,800, a spokesperson told the Katy Times in an email interview.

“Public safety is Commissioner Lesley Briones’ top priority,” the spokesperson said. “We encourage residents to contact the Harris County Precinct 4 Constituent Support Center at 832-927-4444 or email us at service@hcp4.net. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you.”
