Classrooms across Katy are buzzing with books, paintbrushes, and imagination this week as local preschoolers prepare for the upcoming “Literacy in Bloom” open house on Friday, May 2. The event will take place at both Lightbridge Academy locations in Katy — on Peek Road and Spring Green Boulevard — and serves as the culmination of a week-long celebration of literacy, storytelling, and creativity.
Inspired by the children’s book A Seed Grows by Antoinette Portis, the week connects reading with hands-on learning, helping young students explore the world of nature through stories and art. Inside the classrooms, students are busy creating and laminating their own books and bookmarks, designing a collaborative mural of favorite characters, and participating in outdoor-themed story sessions.
On Friday, families and community members are invited to step inside and see the results: bright murals, spring-themed decorations, and preschoolers proudly sharing the stories they’ve written and illustrated. As part of the event, children will sell their handmade creations, with proceeds supporting the Lightbridge Foundation, which contributes to local nonprofits and helps families in need.
“This week is all about making literacy come alive for our students,” said Jessica DeMott, a local education expert from Lightbridge Academy in Katy. “When children are given the chance to tell their own stories and create something with their hands, they’re building confidence, creativity, and a real love for learning.”
Both the 3321 Peek Rd and 1711 Spring Green Blvd, Suite 900 locations will open their doors to families and community members for the event, which is free and open to the public.
