Children at Lightbridge Academy of Katy–Spring Green, 1711 Spring Green Blvd., Suite 900, marked International Mud Day on June 29 with a day of outdoor, sensory-based activities designed to encourage early learning through play.

International Mud Day is observed globally each year on June 29 to promote nature-based, unstructured play for young children. Early childhood educators say the activities support sensory development, creativity, problem-solving and social skills by allowing children to explore natural materials such as mud and water in guided environments.

At the Katy center, about 100 children participated in the daylong event. Classrooms and outdoor spaces were transformed into activity stations featuring mud play, water exploration, sensory bins, storytelling, art activities and gross motor play. Staff also offered alternative, non-messy activities so all children could participate comfortably.

Lightbridge Academy serves children from infancy through kindergarten and incorporates experiential learning throughout its curriculum. The organization follows a “Circle of Care” philosophy focused on supporting children’s academic, social and emotional development in partnership with families and educators.

“This kind of learning allows children to explore, create and problem-solve in a way that feels natural to them,” said the Center Director at Lightbridge Academy of Katy–Spring Green. “We see increased confidence, curiosity and collaboration when they’re engaged in hands-on, sensory experiences like this.”

International Mud Day programming is part of the center’s broader emphasis on experiential learning and outdoor exploration throughout the year.
