Marching into history: 3 Katy ISD bands advance to the UIL State Championships

Katy ISD’s marching band programs closed out the fall season on a high note as three district bands -- Cinco Ranch High School, Seven Lakes High School and Freeman High School -- advanced to the UIL State Marching Band Championships. This marked the first time in district history that three schools earned the opportunity to compete at the state level in the same year, the district said in a November 6 press release.

The milestone caps an exceptional year for Katy ISD’s ten high school marching programs. All received straight first divisions at the UIL Region Contest, advancing to their respective UIL Area Competitions, with seven programs reaching the finals round of their areas. All Katy ISD high school bands achieved standout seasons, each advancing deep into their competitive circuits and earning top honors at contests across the region.

“This season has been extraordinary for every Katy ISD band program,” Executive Director of Fine Arts Damon Archer said. “Each ensemble has demonstrated incredible musicianship, discipline and teamwork. To see three of our bands reach the state level reflects the exceptional dedication of our students and directors.”

Cinco Ranch High School, under the direction of Ray Jones, and Seven Lakes High School, under the direction of John Mays, represented Katy ISD at the November 3 Class 6A State Marching Band Championships in San Antonio’s Alamodome. Freeman High School, directed by Rory Davis, represented the District in Class 4A competition on Nov. 5.

Texas has 247 6A marching bands, and only 41 advanced to the state level. Seven Lakes High School advanced to the 6A State Championship Final Round, performing among the top bands in Texas and finished 13th in the state. Cinco Ranch was ranked 34th in the state.

Freeman competed in the 4A division, which has 218 bands across the state, and 27 advanced to the state level. Freeman is in its second year and still advanced to the state competition with no seniors on the field.

“From our performers to our musicians, our students continue to raise the bar for excellence,” Archer said. “Their performances showcase the pride, artistry and commitment that make Katy ISD Fine Arts programs among the best in Texas.”
