After more than five years of dedicated leadership, Royal ISD Superintendent Emeritus is finally headed for retirement.
Kershner was honored on November 20 at a special reception at the RISD administration building at 3714 FM 359 in Pattison. He will officially end his educational career in December.
Kershner announced his decision to retire back in May.
“Throughout his tenure, Kershner has played a pivotal role in advancing the district’s mission, fostering student success, and strengthening community engagement,” said the district in a May 13 statement announcing Kershner’s retirement.
“This journey has been filled with meaningful work, personal growth, and, most importantly, the privilege of collaborating with an extraordinary group of people who make Royal ISD so special,” said Kershner at that time. “I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am grateful for the unwavering dedication of our students, staff, and community.”
Under Kershner’s leadership, Royal ISD achieved several milestones, including:
· Implementation of Capturing Kids’ Hearts, earning National Showcase Recognition two years in a row
· Development of the district’s Strategic Direction, setting a clear vision for the future
· Passage of the 2023 bond, securing resources for enhanced facilities and programs
· Hosting the 2025 Future Ready Superintendent Leadership Network meeting, positioning Royal ISD as a leader in innovation and excellence in education
According to Kershner’s LinkedIn profile, he joined Royal ISD in August 20 as superintendent and became Superintendent Emeritus upon announcing his retirement. Prior to coming to Royal, Kershner served as an assistant superintendent in Splendora ISD and as high school principal. Before his tenure at Splendora, he was an assistant principal at Royal. Kershner also worked in Katy ISD as an administrative principal at Cinco Ranch High School and as an assistant principal at Mayde Creek High School.
New RISD superintendent Megan Pape was hired to replace Kershner, and she started in August 2025.
