Trees, teachers and tubas: Katy Heritage Society sets December events

Nothing says “Christmas in Katy” quite like the festive holiday events hosted by the Katy Heritage Society.

And this December will be an exceptional month for the organization, as it continues some long-standing traditions, revives some old ones, and introduces new programs.

On December 2 from 6 to 7 p.m., the Katy Heritage Society, in partnership with Katy ISD, will hold the annual “Teacher of the Year” brick unveiling at Katy Heritage Park, 5990 George Bush Drive in Katy, sponsored by Venus Construction and Modern Pest Control. Come honor excellence in education as the new Teacher of the Year bricks are unveiled, recognizing educators who make a lasting impact in the Katy community.

A beloved tradition returns December 3 with the tree lighting at J.V. Cardiff & Sons rice dryers. Enjoy lights, music, and the warmth of neighbors coming together to welcome December in true Katy spirit, sponsored by BASE power company. For the first time since 1999, join the Society as they light up the Katy, Texas sky and rekindle a favorite local tradition that once marked the beginning of the holiday season for generations. The event will be from 5 to 8 p.m. in the parking lot of Katy Beer Garden, 5339 E. Third St. in Katy. Reserved seating area with prime viewing available for a $10.00 donation to the Katy Heritage Society at www.katyheritagesociety.com/events.

“Christmas at the Park” returns to Katy Heritage Park, 5990 George Bush Drive in Katy, on December 6 from 6 to 8 p.m., presented by Medline. Event tickets include a cup of hot cocoa while supplies last, a letter to Santa, a seasonal craft, tour of the historic homes and the beautifully decorated Christmas trees. Christmas music. Other options include a Rudolph and Frosty movie, and pictures with Santa. Hayride and more available as add-ons. ALL ages 1 + need a ticket.

The Katy Heritage Society, in partnership with the Lone Star Symphonic Band, has also announced the return of “TubaChristmas – Katy,” a one-of-a-kind holiday celebration that fills the air with the deep, festive sounds of tubas and euphoniums performing timeless Christmas carols. The event will take place on Saturday, December 13, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Katy Heritage Park (5990 George Bush Drive, Katy). Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair and enjoy this free, family-friendly concert among the beautifully lit historic homes of Katy. Founded in 1974 by tuba player Harvey Phillips, TubaChristmas concerts are now held in cities around the world to honor legendary musician William J. Bell and celebrate the

spirit of community and the joy of music during the holiday season. The Katy performance will feature tuba and euphonium players of all ages from local schools and the surrounding area.
