Two Katy ISD robotics teams from Cinco Ranch High School and Freeman High School have qualified for the FIRST Robotics Competition World Championship following a strong showing at the FIRST in Texas District Championship and UIL State Championship, the district announced on April 24.

The “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” (FIRST) competition has operated as a 501(C)(3) organization for more than 30 years, focusing on team-based robotics programs for children.

After weeks of preparation at the Robert Shaw Center, teams from Cinco Ranch High School, Jordan High School, Freeman High School, Paetow High School, Tompkins High School and Seven Lakes High School competed against top programs from across Texas.

Teams earned their place at the state championship through two district competitions and were divided into two divisions. Cinco Ranch, Freeman and Paetow competed in the Mercury Division, while Seven Lakes, Jordan and Tompkins competed in the Apollo Division.

Following two days of competitive qualification matches, four Katy ISD teams advanced to the playoff rounds. Cinco Ranch, Seven Lakes, Jordan and Tompkins were selected for elimination matches, demonstrating advanced engineering, strategy and teamwork.

Cinco Ranch High School made a deep playoff run, competing through five rounds of elimination matches before finishing as the Mercury Division Finalist.

Based on their performance throughout the season, Cinco Ranch High School and Freeman High School secured spots at the FIRST Robotics Competition World Championship. The global event featured 593 teams and took place April 29 through May 2 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

“Katy ISD robotics students continue to raise the bar with their innovation, teamwork and technical skill,” said Nick Gonzales, Director of Career and Technical Education in Katy ISD. “Their success at the state level and advancement to the world championship reflects the strength of our programs and the dedication of our students and educators.”
