Cinco Ranch (2-4, 2-2) vs. Paetow (4-1, 3-0), 6:30 p.m. at Legacy Stadium
Last year: Cinco Ranch 17, Paetow 7
- The week kicks off with arguably its most important game, as two playoff contenders face off with big implications on the line for both as we reach the midway point in district.
Cinco Ranch comes into the matchup after a loss to Jordan last week, struggling on both sides of the ball and not being able to keep pace with the Warriors. The Cougars could never get anything going, on offense they had less than 175 yards of total offense and only 111 yards on the ground and on defense they couldn’t stop Jordan from doing whatever the Warriors wanted, allowing 280 rushing yards and 202 passing yards in a game that got away from the Cougars early. Charlie Adamoli only went 10 for 24 passing in the game and the teams best performer was Scott Eckel, who caught five passes for 63 yards and two touchdowns.
Paetow meanwhile comes off its fourth straight win and third straight district win to start after a strong performance against Morton Ranch in week six. The Panthers led almost the whole way and got big plays all over the field. Terrence Johnson continued his hot play by going over 100 yards rushing once again with two touchdown runs of 66 and 23 yards, Curtis Zeno added a touchdown run while Jackson Farrar threw a 62 yard touchdown pass to Daqualyn Lott and ran for a 9-yard touchdown himself, while defensively, Keytavien Williams had an interception which he returned 85 yards for a touchdown.
It will be a battle of opposing strengths with these two teams. Cinco Ranch will want to spread the ball around and throw to its weapons in the passing game, while trying to create havoc and force turnovers defensively to help with its run defense. Paetow meanwhile will try to grind the game offensively, running the ball and moving it down the field methodically, while defensively their excellent secondary will try to shut down Cinco’s offense.
Katy (4-1, 3-0) vs. Taylor (2-4, 1-3), 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium
Last year: Katy 49, Taylor 3
- Katy faces Taylor this week in a matchup between teams on opposite ends of the district race at this point in the season.
Katy comes off its bye week and will try to keep up its unbeaten start to district. It’s a game they have dominated and last year was no exception, when the Tigers beat Taylor 49-3. Katy only passed for 64 yards in the game, but dominated in the run game, as Tremayne Hill had 183 yards and a touchdown rushing while two other players went over 40 yards rushing and they had six total touchdowns on the ground, while Katy held Taylor to under 200 yards of total offense, which is the exact type of game they would like to replicate.
Taylor meanwhile, comes off a loss to Seven Lakes last week and will need to bounce back quickly. The Mustangs moved the ball well on the ground but not the air in the game and were led by Xavier Haynes, who rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, while Chanze Harris had 34 yards receiving. The defense struggled for Taylor in the game, as they allowed 104 yards through the air and 218 yards on the ground to Seven Lakes in the loss, but did force both an interception and fumble for turnovers.
For Katy, it will be about doing more of the same and continuing to get better week by week, while Taylor will try to bounce back and build off its strong run game and get better in some areas.
Friday
Morton Ranch (0-6, 0-4) vs. Tompkins (2-3, 1-2), 6:30 p.m. at Legacy Stadium
Last year: Tompkins 41, Morton Ranch 20
- Morton Ranch and Tompkins will face off in week seven as the Falcons try to string together back-to-back wins for the first time this year and Morton Ranch tries to get in the win column for the first time this season.
Morton Ranch comes off a loss against Paetow where the Mavericks struggled defensively and moved the ball but had a hard time getting it in the endzone in the matchup. Tyler Gilmore scored the teams only touchdown on a 1-yard run, but couldn’t stop Paetow’s offense as the Panthers scored over 40 points.
Tompkins meanwhile, comes off its first district win of the year and did it in strong fashion over Mayde Creek. The Faclons offense came alive in the game and sophomore running back Ethan Meadows led the way with 194 yards on the ground, 60 yards receiving and six total touchdowns. Justin Thierheimer had a strong day as well, throwing for 282 yards and three touchdowns while KJ Madison had 78 yards receiving and a touchdown and Bisi Bello had 76 yards receiving. Tompkins defense had a strong day against the run, only allowing 40 yards, but did allow 311 yards through the air.
Tompkins will look to build on its strong performance and continue to clean up some things, while Morton Ranch will hope to lean on its strong run game and have improved defense in the matchup.
Seven Lakes (3-2, 1-2) vs. Jordan (6-0, 4-0), 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium
Last year: Jordan 38, Seven Lakes 14
- Jordan and Seven Lakes meet with both teams coming off wins and good performances last week and looking to continue building off it.
Seven Lakes earned its first district win with a win over Taylor last week in which the teams defense led the way. The Spartans defense limited Taylor to under 180 yards of offense, including just 35 yards through the air, while creating two turnovers in a very strong day. Offensively, Apollo Lema rushed for 131 yards and Braylon Hayes ran for 65 yards with both rushing for touchdowns. Shaan Patel completed 10 of 17 passes for 104 yards, but also through an interception. Kaiser Floyd had 37 yards receiving while Carter Hatten had 22 and Ryan Fowler had 21 yards receiving.
Jordan dominated its game against Cinco. Defensively, the Warriors kept the Cougars pass game from ever getting on track, limiting the Cougars to just 111 yards through he air, while also limiting them to 60 yards on the ground. Offensively, Zion Jones ran for 145 yards and three touchdowns while Tanner West added 63 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Beau Bryant had 193 yards passing, completing 12 of 18 attempts and threw a touchdown, but also two interceptions. Landon Williams led the way receiving wise with 73 yards and a touchdown while Andrew Marsh had 70 yards on five catches.
Jordan will be motivated to keep its unbeaten start to the year going while Seven Lakes will try to build on its big win.
