The parking lot at Academy Sports + Outdoors’ location at 23155 Katy Fwy. in Katy was transformed into an outdoor multi-court basketball complex, as the retail chain hosted the two-day Academy Sports + Outdoors H-Town Classic 3-on-3 Youth Basketball Tournament, powered by Nike and Jordan Brand, on October 17-18.
The event, which was free open to boys and girls, grades 6 through 12, drew more than 100 teams and between 300 and 400 participants from across the greater Houston area including nearby Brookshire, an Academy spokesperson said. Teams competed in four divisions: middle school girls, middle school boys, high school girls and high school boys.
All proceeds from the H-Town Classic benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, supporting youth programs and community development in the Houston area. On the first day of the tournament, Academy Sports + Outdoors presented a check for $30,000 to the organization.
Special guest Sheryl Swoopes of the Houston Comets was on hand for the check presentation. The Comets are returning to Houston for the 2027 WNBA season, Swoopes said. Cleveland Cavaliers star Ricky Davis was also spotted in the crowd.
The championship presentations took place on October 18, with winners in each division taking home an H-Town Classic Championship belt, in addition to bragging rights. Every player that participated throughout this weekend received a tournament jersey that they got to take home.
