A Royal Elementary student brought a BB gun to school Feb. 10 and shot two students, who were not injured, district officials said.
Officials said the BB gun was confiscated and the campus was secured. The parents of both students were notified.
While the district sent a notice to all Royal Elementary parents, apparently not all received the message immediately. One parent complained to a Houston television station about the incident. A district spokesperson said the district did make contact with that parent.
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Gendri Aguillon, 25, for injuring a child and making a false police report.
On Feb. 9, deputies responded to the Texas Children’s Hospital for a report of a road rage incident involving a child reportedly injured by a gunshot.
Deputies spoke with Houston Police officers at the hospital. After further investigation, Fort Bend County Sheriff’s detectives determined that the four-year-old child was injured at a residence located at the 25000 block of Tancy Ranch Court in Katy. Possible mishandling of a firearm contributed to the child's injury.
Aguillon was taken into custody, booked into the Fort Bend County Jail and charged with both injury to a child and making a false report. His bond for the making a false report charge is set at $750. No bond has been set for injury to a child charge. Magistration is pending.
The child is in stable condition. This incident remains under investigation.
“No child should ever be harmed in any way,” Sheriff Eric Fagan said. “Our detectives are thoroughly investigating the incident and we remind everyone that making a false police report is illegal. Those responsible will be held accountable.”
A 23-year-old Katy man died Jan. 31 after suffering an apparent medical emergency in the Harris County Jail.
Kevin L. Smith, 23, of the 19200 block of Golden Wave Drive, was taken to the jail clinic. There, Harris Health medical staff saw him. At approximately 10:40 a.m., Smith was taken to the hospital by ambulance. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at approximately 11:25 a.m.
Smith had no obvious physical injuries, deputies said in a statement.
The Houston Police Department is investigating the death in accordance with state law that requires all jail deaths to be investigated by an outside law enforcement agency.
The Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs Division is also investigating to determine whether all applicable policies and procedures were followed, which is standard following the death of an inmate. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences was to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
In addition, the death has been reported to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
Smith faced a continuous violence against the family charge and was free on $10,000 bond. According to the charging document, Smith allegedly assaulted a woman he was dating on at least two occasions last year.
