“It was a big win for us,” said Fiyinfoluwa Adeleye. “It was a statement game. We knew coming into tonight that we needed this win, not just for this game but we needed it to keep pace in district. We came out and played our best, played in the gameplan and thankfully came out with a win.”

Stout defense leads Tompkins over Seven Lakes in big district win

Posted

Tompkins had a plan going into Tuesday.

The Falcons (12-4, 2-1) knew their opponent was one of the toughest they could face, but the also knew they could be successful against Seven Lakes (6-7, 1-2), and they knew that they would need to to keep pace atop the District 19-6A race.

And the Falcons did just that, putting together a full game and playing lights out defensively en route to a 59-46 win over the Spartans in a game that while early in the district schedule, was still mightily important.

“They played really well tonight and it’s really hard to find anything to complain about,” said Tompkins head coach Tamatha Ray. “It was a really good performance, but I just told them after that we’ll look at the film and there are some things we can do even better. This district is tough because the coaches in this district are so good. You have to bring you’re A-game every Tuesday and Friday night. I’m just proud of the kids for playing their butts off.”

Macy Spencer was once again at the center of the action for Tompkins. The senior point guard was active all night, splitting double teams scoring and creating for others as she finished with 25 points and nailed three three-pointers to lead the Falcons.

“A lot of teams have started to double me this year and I’ve had to learn to still be aggressive and play through it,” Spencer said. “I know that someone’s going to be open off of that so I just try to create and find that person every time it comes, and if it doesn’t then I attack. It’s just all about finding that right read and getting easy buckets.”

Things were tight throughout, as the Falcons led by three after the first quarter, but Seven Lakes came back to tie things at halftime as both teams battled back and forth. But the Falcons stepped things up in the second half, allowing just 20 points in the final two frames while forcing turnovers and making things happen on the offensive end as well.

“It was a big win for us,” said Fiyinfoluwa Adeleye. “It was a statement game. We knew coming into tonight that we needed this win, not just for this game but we needed it to keep pace in district. We came out and played our best, played in the gameplan and thankfully came out with a win.”

Adeleye played a huge part in the win, especially defensively as the anchor at the back of the defense, while Tanya Philip was equally huge at the top of the defense, as the Falcons length and athleticism frustrated what Seven Lakes wanted to do offensively.

“Tanya really is just disruptive with her length and it allows us to move her around where we need her on defense because she’s so versatile,” Ray said. “We thought tonight with the size we have at the front of our press it would bother them and she did a really good job with it. She’s a great defender and whatever we need she does it because she’s so coachable. Having her at the front and Fiyin at the back was so big for us tonight.”

The Falcons will look to continue the momentum they’ve gained going, as the Falcons bounced back from dropping their first district game of the season to Katy by winning three straight and beating two strong district foes in Seven Lakes and Cinco Ranch.

“The response was very much needed from us,” Spencer said “No one was happy with how we played against Katy and we knew we had to be better after that. It was a wake up call for us and we just have to continue to do what we do best and continue to improve from here on out in district.”
